The historic towns of Silver Cliff and Westcliffe offer Colorado ranch real estate with a location about an hour and a half southwest of Colorado Springs in Colorado's Custer County. Set at an elevation of 8,000 feet in the Rocky Mountains, the communities support an enduring tradition of Colorado ranches in the Wet Mountain Valley. Colorado mountain homes in Westcliffe and Silver Cliff feature magnificent views of the cresting peaks of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains to the west and the Wet Mountains to the east.

Picturesque Colorado mountain real estate in the Wet Mountain Valley is a well-kept secret. Scenic Colorado horse ranches, farms, and Colorado hunting and fishing properties are cherished investments for vacation homes, retirement properties, and for raising a family in 4-H

Westcliffe, a small town of less than 500 people, is the county seat. Westcliffe CO real estate is near quaint shops, restaurants, museums, and a cornucopia of recreational activities. Westcliffe hosts several popular events and venues including the High Mountain Hay Fever Bluegrass Festival, Wet Mountain Western Days, and Westcliffe Center for the Performing Arts.

To the east, Town of Silver Cliff is the larger of the two with over 500 residents. The Silver Cliff population grew up around the Silver Cliff mine and other silver mines such as the Bull-Domingo. It was the county seat from 1886 to 1928 during its heyday. The large mining operation went down after stock manipulations by East Coast stock operators. Although shareholders rescued the company and renamed it Geyser Mining Company, it was never immune to inbred shady dealings.

More than 600 mines are located in the Hardscrabble Mining District that is within a six-mile radius of Silver Cliff. The Racine Boy Mine had the largest steam hoist in Colorado and ran two 12-hour shifts with 200 men on each. Other nearby mines hauled up copper, gold, and lead as well as silver. The community celebrates its heritage during Mining Days, a festive annual event held during the second weekend in June.

Westcliffe formed when the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad came to Custer County and located its station a mile outside of Silver Cliff. Railroad magnates Dr. William Bell, who founded Manitou Springs, and General Palmer, founder of Colorado Springs, planned a town when they planned their new railway line. Although silver mining had begun to dwindle at the time, Westcliffe grew as a supply center for local ranchers and farmers. The Denver & Rio Grande hauled produce and other goods to other parts of the state and nation.

In modern days, the two towns offer mountain bikers and sightseers a glimpse into the past, elevated by the quaint bed and breakfasts, campgrounds and RV parks, and Dude Ranches. A calendar of events entices visitors to share in the bounty of beauty. Beginning with a tour along the Frontier Pathways Scenic & Historic Byway to Music in the Valley to events on Memorial Day Weekend and in December or on the Fourth of July, the Wet Mountain Valley promises to be worth taking the “road less traveled” to experience its treasures.

From country dining to browsing galleries to getting away from it all, the friendly communities provide services with a smile and welcome newcomers to their exquisitely cozy lifestyle in the Rocky Mountains.
